Jermaine Hughes found his voice at a Youth Speaks poetry slam in high school. He was a featured spoken word artist at Lyrical Opposition's first Paradigm Rhymes in Daly City in September 2014, and Lyrical Opposition inducted him into its roster with the Winter 2015 class, alongside Cheddy Uluave, June Elizabeth, Brittany Williams and Benjamin Uluave. He headlined UNDIVIDED 9 in 2017, performed at UNDIVIDED 10: COLLECTIVE, spoke at TEDxSoMa the same year, facilitated personal finance and spoken word workshops for Lyrical Academy, hosted Lyrical Assembly 003 in 2019 and performed at Freedom Narrative in 2020. In 2018 he closed his Woke Not Broke writing workshop series, hosted with Lyrical Opposition in Oakland, with the release of his poetry book Woke Not Broke.
